bretanda dorpers

Growing up on a sheep farm in South Africa, it was just a natural choice to do a sheep breeding program.   My father had the Mondriaan Mutton Merino stud and everything I learned from him over the years came in very handy.   As there are no South African Mutton Merinos in the US, we decided on a Dorper program which is also a South African breed.

Currently we have a commercial herd, and our lamb season turned out phenomenal.

Dikkes (Full blood)

Dikkes is our first Full Blood Dorper in the program.  He sired his first lambs, and we are very impressed.  He will get his first Full Blood ladies soon.

The Dorper is a South African breed of domestic sheep developed by crossing Dorset Horn and the Blackhead Persian sheep. The breed was created through the efforts of the South African Department of Agriculture to breed a meat sheep suitable to the more arid regions of the country. It is now farmed in other areas as well and is the second most common sheep breed in South Africa.

The Dorper was originally bred to produce under arid conditions. Now also farmed in ultra cold, snow and wet conditions.

Under these conditions the animal must be able to survive and resist health hazards and diseases. You can select for hardiness through observation and record keeping.

The Dorper ewe will nourish her lambs under difficult conditions. When the ewes are left alone, they will lamb easily and will retain and look after their lambs. Give them enough space with good grazing, clean water, etc.

Furthermore, they will give you a good return on your investment. The Dorper does not easily lose their lambs, even if they are handled soon after lambing. The mortality rate in the Dorper is low

Our herd is kind and sweet and easy to handle.  They are treated like Pets and love the attention we give them.

The lambs are soft and the best entertainers out there and has a personality since day one.

It is just a great breed to have here on the farm and brings lots of joy to us.
